My first surfing shots for 2013

The swells at San Juan beach are much bigger this January 5th of the New Year than the usual garden variety wavelets in my past few visits. Although the setting sun was covered by thin clouds from time to time, more explosive surfing action made shooting a lot more exciting.

Girls just wanna have (surfin') fun

Even when the waves are small, and the pros aren't riding; as long as light is sweet, and gals are having fun, surf-shooting is pretty cool.

Fishing towards the setting sun

A lone fisherman tries his luck near the seashore at San Juan, La Union, as the sun sets in the western horizon. This spectacle is a welcome treat after a good day of shooting waveriders.

My 400 2.8 IS tries surfing

The San Juan surfers were riding the waves nearer to my favorite spot this weekend. The closer shooting distance allowed me the opportunity to use my 400 2.8 IS + 1.4x TC (560 mm) instead of my usual 500 f4 IS + 1.4x TC (700 mm).

Surfing in sweet, late afternoon light

My favorite time to shoot the San Juan beach surfers is late in the afternoon, in the last couple of hours before the sun sets. The golden light comes in from behind me, a bit on the left side, casting some shadow and giving the subject a 3D'ish look.
